「メジャーリーグベースボール2K8」は、「Take-Two」が手掛ける野球シミュレーション「メジャーリーグベースボール」シリーズの最新作。前作「2K7」の日本語版は株式会社スパイクから発売されているが、「2K8」はサイバーフロントから発売される。
「2K8」では、2007年のメジャーリーグ公式戦の戦績データに、移籍情報などを反映させた最新の選手データを搭載。各選手の動きや癖、ボールパーク(球場)のデータも盛り込み、リアルなプレイが楽しめる。イチローや松井、松坂など日本人選手を含むメジャーリーグ全30チームに加え、今作では新たに全米のマイナーリーグのデータまでカバーしている。
ゲームシステムではAIが改良されたほか、PS3版とXbox 360版には新要素が盛り込まれている。まず、カードシステムが導入され、各選手ごとに特定のミッションをクリアすることで、その選手のコレクションカードが入手できる。さらにオンラインを通じ、世界中のプレーヤーとカードのトレードが可能となっている。また、オンライン対戦にも対応し、世界中のプレーヤーと対戦プレイが楽しめる。

ゲームモードは「GMキャリアモード」や「シーズンモード」など全8種類を用意。各モードの内容は以下の通り。
【ゲームモード】
・シーズンモード (PS2のみ)
1シーズン制のゲームモード。試合数は最大で162試合まで設定可能で、ドラフト制度も導入されている。
・エキシビジョンモード (PS3/Xbox 360)
ホームチーム、アウェイチームでそれぞれ好きなチームを選択し、1試合のみで対決するモード。
・フランチャイズモード (PS3/PS2/Xbox 360)
基本的にはシーズンモードと同じだが、2年目以降も継続してプレイすることができるモード。球団の成長過程を楽しみながら、じっくりとプレイできる。
・GMキャリアモード (PS2のみ)
球団の運営から選手の獲得・管理まで、ゼネラルマネージャーとしての任務を遂行しながら、全162試合とポストシーズンを戦い抜き、ワールドシリーズの制覇を目指す。なお、PS3/Xbox 360版では、フランチャイズモードにこのモードの要素が含まれている。
・シチュエーションモード (PS3/PS2/Xbox 360)
ホームチーム、アウェイチームのそれぞれに、スコア、イニング、アウトカウント、打順などの試合状況を自由に設定し、途中からプレイするモード。
・監督対戦モード (PS3/PS2/Xbox 360)
好きなチームの監督として、試合で采配を振るうモード。ボード上で選手たちがコマのように動き、試合がシミュレートされる。
・トーナメントモード (PS3/PS2/Xbox 360)
試合に参加するチーム数や試合数を自由に設定し、トーナメント形式で争うモード。複数のプレーヤーで楽しめる。
・ホームランダービーモード (PS3/PS2/Xbox 360)
MLBオールスター前夜祭に行なわれるホームラン競争と同じルールはもちろん、時間内に打ったホームランの数を競うなど、複数のルールが用意されている。
