今年、最高栄誉のBest of Showに選ばれたのは、あらかたの予想どおりValveの「Half-Life 2」。Best of Show以外にもBest PC Game、Best Action Game、Special Commendation for Graphicsの計4部門を受賞しており、昨年の「DOOM III」5部門受賞(4部門＋Special Commendation for Sound)に取って代わる高い評を受けた。

　次世代FPSがBest of Showを含む主要な賞を総なめにするのはこれで2年連続。ちなみに2001年のBest of Showはニンテンドーゲームキューブが受賞しているが、今年電撃的に発表され話題を集めたSCEのPlaystation Portable(PSP)はノミネートにも洩れており、こうしたFPS偏重の流れは当分収まりそうにない。

　さて、ジャンル、プラットフォーム別のBestに目を移すと、Best Console GameがBungie Studiosの「Halo 2」、Best Action/Adventure GameにUbi Soft Entertainmentの「Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time」、Best Fighting Gameにナムコの「Soul Calibur 2」、Best Role Playing GameにBig Blue Boxの「Fable」、Best Racing GameにPolyphony Digitalの「Gran Turismo 4」が選出されている。客観的に見ていずれも納得できるラインナップだ。

　予想外といえるのは、毎年Bestの常連だった任天堂がすっかり姿を消していること、それからコナミの「METAL GEAR SOLID 3 SNAKE EATER」がノミネートから洩れていることなどだろうか。また、Fighting Game、日本でいう格闘ゲームは相変わらず日本独占なのも寂しい限りだ。来年のE3もまた衝撃的なゲームの登場に期待したいところだ。
